Preview: Liam Smith vs. Mwakinyo, unification Jonas vs. Berghult and British championship Azeez-Pitters in Boxxer event

Faced with the possibility of staying with Matchroom Boxing or accepting one of the alternative offers he had on the table, former super welterweight world champion Liam “Beefy” Smith 31(8KO)-3(1)-1 ended up opting for the proposal of Boxxer, a company with which he signed a multi-fight contract less than two months ago. With this new alliance sealed, now it is the turn for the British fighter to make his debut in an event of this promotional group, something that will happen on Saturday at the Echo Arena in his hometown, Liverpool.

His opponent in this clash will be Hassan “Tornado” Mwakinyo 20(14KO)-2(1) who, despite coming from a country known in boxing for having many low and medium level fighters who travel the world suffering defeats against rivals with aspirations, is the exception on the Tanzanian scene. In fact, Mwakinyo, who currently resides in the United States, is a young boxer, with certain qualities, good numbers and who has faced some foreign rivals in his country trying to improve the appearance of his record. In addition, Mwakinyo has the merit of having achieved a victory in the United Kingdom by defeating in two rounds Sam Eggington.

Therefore, Mwakinyo is not a boxer who, theoretically, is going to be willing to jump to the canvas at the first shot, and he will surely look to use his advantage in reach, his speed and a punch that should not be underestimated to try to spoil Beefy’s plans. All in all, Smith, who has scored two stoppage wins against Anthony Folwer and Jessie Vargas since a controversial loss in Russia against Magomed Kurbanov, seems to be at a higher level than the African boxer.

Having remarkable ring intelligence, ability to handle demanding fights, cunning to find gaps in defense and good use of power shots, if Smith takes advantage of the moments of inaction that Mwakinyo usually has, he should be able to make a difference with his solid one-twos and one-two-hooks.

Jonas seeks to unify
Another boxer from Liverpool that will enter the ring will be the Olympian Natasha Jonas 11(8KO)-2(1)-1, who after an unconvincing start in her career (in which she lost against Obenauf) and brave performances against Terri Harper (a draw) and Katie Taylor (close defeat) moved up from lightweight to super welterweight to be crowned WBO world champion. Jonas captured this belt in a very easy fight (TKO in the second round) against Chris Namús, boxer in the final stretch of her career, so this Saturday will be when she will really have to overcome her first important challenge in the division.

In this unification of world titles, Jonas will fight the WBC titleholder, the Swedish Patricia Berghult 15(3KO)-0, world youth silver medalist, undefeated and who, having obtained a victory against the combative Hannah Rankin, for the moment has more merits in the division than the British boxer. However, Berghult’s punching technique is, to say the least, unconventional and hardly forceful, so a fighter as Jonas with more overall quality experience, with almost the same height, more explosive, faster and with much more power could perfectly be superior in the exchanges and obtain an important victory.

Undercard
Supporting these bouts, the event will also feature a good British light heavyweight championship between the undefeated titleholder Dan Azeez 16(11KO)-0 and the former champion Shakan Pitters 17(6KO)-1(1).

Since his narrow victory against Ricky Summers, the strong Azeez is having solid performances and begins to set his sights on very important fights in and outside the UK. Nevertheless, before he can get closer to his ambitious goals, he will have to deal first with the mobile and tricky boxing from the 20cm (8”) taller Pitters, whose only loss came against the world title challenger Craig “Spider” Richards.

In addition, on the card there will be an interesting super middleweight fight between John Docherty 12(9KO)-1, unfairly treated by Matchroom Boxing, and the undefeated Diego “Dinamita” Costa 8(5KO)-0, and will participate prospects (against opponents to be confirmed) like the heavyweight, Olympic bronze medalist, Frazer Clarke 2(2KO)-0 and the super lightweight Adam Aziz 5(4KO)-0.

The final part of this event will be broadcast in the UK on Sky Sports Main Event from 21:30 local time, 16:30 ET/13:30 PT, while the full bill will be televised on Sky Sports Arena from 19:00 British time, 14:00 ET/11:00 PT.
