Leo Santa Cruz unificará con Rey Vargas, Leigh Wood se medirá a Mauricio Lara tras permiso especial de la WBA

Es evidente que la WBA no está ejecutando su plan de reducción de campeones de la forma más rápida, drástica y eficaz, si bien es justo decir también que las ordenadas peleas para eliminar los titulares regulares se están viendo repetidamente obstaculizadas por los proyectos de las grandes promotoras mundiales. Aunque hay varios casos que se podrían citar como ejemplo, el más reciente de ellos es el del campeonato mundial WBA del peso pluma entre el monarca Leo Santa Cruz y el titular “regular” Leigh Wood.
Hay que recordar que esta pelea fue ordenada primero en el mes de abril y que Matchroom Boxing y Premier Boxing Champions no movieron un dedo para que se materializase. Finalmente, en julio PBC solicitó que la contienda se aplazase para que Santa Cruz pudiese unificar con Rey Vargas, algo a lo que se opuso el equipo de Wood y que llevó, por consiguiente, a la WBA a rechazar el permiso. Entonces la WBA reordenó el duelo y puso fecha para la subasta, pareciendo que no iba a haber ya más camino para el mexicano que afrontar la pelea o dejar su título vacante. De hecho, Matchroom y PBC notificaron al organismo en agosto que habían alcanzado un acuerdo definitivo para el Santa Cruz vs. Wood y que en breve se publicarían los detalles.
Con todo, todas estas idas y venidas no han servido absolutamente para nada, puesto que la WBA finalmente ha dado su brazo a torcer y, tras una petición conjunta de un permiso especial por parte de Matchroom y PBC, ha terminado aceptando aplazar el enfrentamiento una vez más. Así, Santa Cruz tendrá el camino libre para una planeada unificación contra el titular WBC Rey Vargas, mientras que Leigh Wood se medirá a Mauricio Lara en el combate estelar de una velada ya confirmada oficialmente para el día 24 de septiembre. Tras las pugnas Santa Cruz vs. Vargas y Wood vs. Lara, los ganadores estarán en teoría “obligados” a enfrentarse, aunque a estas alturas no sería raro que el encuentro terminase aplazándose de nuevo o directamente no realizándose.
En resumidas cuentas, aunque ver estos tres combates del peso pluma será más interesante que ver sólo el Santa Cruz vs. Wood, la WBA ha mostrado nuevamente una falta de seriedad espantosa. Es decir, si quería evidenciar firmeza, no debería haber cedido en ningún momento ante el juego planteado por los promotores, mientras que si verdaderamente estaba dispuesta a otorgar el permiso especial, podría haberlo dado desde el principio en abril (o en julio u en otro momento en las negociaciones) y nos habríamos ahorrado semanas y semanas de ultimátums vacíos y documentos oficiales carentes de valor.

It is evident that the WBA is not executing its plan to reduce champions in the most fast, drastic and effective way, although it is also fair to say that the ordered fights to eliminate the regular title holders are being repeatedly hampered by the projects of the big promotional companies. Although there are several cases that could be mentioned as an example, the most recent of them is the one concerning the WBA featherweight world championship between the monarch Leo Santa Cruz and the “regular” titleholder Leigh Wood.
It must be remembered that this fight was first ordered in the month of April and that Matchroom Boxing and Premier Boxing Champions did not move a finger for the fight to materialize. Finally, in July, PBC requested a postponement of the bout so that Santa Cruz could unify with Rey Vargas, but Wood’s team opposed to it and, consequently, the WBA refused to give permission. Then the WBA reordered the duel and set a date for the purse bid, seeming that there was no other way for the Mexican than to face the fight or vacate his title. In fact, Matchroom and PBC informed the sanctioning body in August that they had reached a definitive agreement for the clash Santa Cruz vs. Wood and that the details would be announced shortly.
However, all this process have been absolutely useless, since the WBA has finally given up and, after a joint request for special permission by Matchroom and PBC, has ended up accepting to postpone the duel once again. Thus, Santa Cruz will face a planned unification against the WBC titleholder Rey Vargas, while Leigh Wood will battle Mauricio Lara in the main event of an evening officially confirmed for September 24. After the fights Santa Cruz vs. Vargas and Wood vs. Lara, the winners will theoretically be «mandated» to face each other, although at this point it would not be strange for the match to end up being postponed again or not taking place at all.
All in all, though watching these three featherweight bouts will be more interesting than just watching the fight Santa Cruz vs. Wood, the WBA has once again displayed an appalling lack of professionalism. In other words, if the organization wanted to show firmness, it should not have given in to the tricks used by the promoters, while if the WBA was really willing to grant a special permission, it could have been given from the beginning in April (or in July or in other moment in the negotiations) and weeks and weeks of empty ultimatums and worthless official documents would have been avoided.
