Preview: Sheeraz vs. Torres, British championship Clarke vs. Heffron and new fights for Ball and McCann at Frank Warren event

Frank Warren’s latest card suffered important cancellations in the days before the weigh-in, so many may think that it could happen again with this promoter’s scheduled next event. In any case, at the moment Saturday’s card at the Copper Box Arena looks quite interesting, with three fights for unbeaten boxers and a British championship.

Test for the Young Boxer of the Year
The year 2021 was not exactly a great season for the undefeated Hamzah Sheeraz 15(11KO)-0, since his resounding victory over Ezequiel Gurría was followed by a not-so-brilliant triumph against Bradley Skeete. Indeed, although many considered that Skeete’s career was over, he offered difficult rounds to Sheeraz (in the impartial scorecards he was winning widely) before the prospect obtained a controversial TKO: a round before the stoppage, Sheeraz connected a brutal shot when his rival had a knee on the canvas, action that could perfectly have led to his disqualification.

However, although this victory was more of a setback for his career than an achievement (he received much criticism for this result), Sheeraz incomprehensibly won the prestigious Young Boxer of the Year award, which generated protests from fans, who considered that the trophy had been given to him by issues beyond sports. Be that as it may, after his TKO over Jez Smith in March, this Saturday Sheeraz will face a fight against the Argentinian Francisco Torres 17(5KO)-3 (1)-1.

This competent boxer, former Argentina’s national champion and who has not lost in his last ten bouts, made himself known internationally last November with a good performance in the United States against former world challenger Jose Benavídez Jr., whom he would have defeated if the corrupt judges had not scored the duel as a draw to protect PBC’s plans. Be as it may, Torres is a motivated fighter, with good reach and who has fought twice as many rounds as his opponent, so it seems that he should offer a very adequate test for Sheeraz, who in case of winning could enter the WBC top 15 through a minor title that will be at stake in the duel.

Clarke’s first defense
The world youth gold medalist Willy Hutchinson was considered one of the biggest prospects in Frank Warren’s stable before he was beaten by TKO in an upset against Lennox Clarke 20(8KO)-1-1, who many regarded as a boxer well below the top of the division in the British scene. This win improved drastically Clarke’s prestige and served him to conquer the British and Commonwealth super middleweight belts, but he hasn’t fought once since then. Sixteen months later, Clarke will end his inactivity with a defense against the challenger Mark “Kid Dynamite” Heffron 27 (21KO)-2(2)-1, who has little room for failure.

Having lost by stoppage two British middleweight championships against Liam Williams and Denzel Bentley, Heffron heads into a new title fight in a higher weight class knowing that another defeat could have negative and long-lasting consequences for his career. Even so, Heffron is a brave boxer, with punch and more recent activity who, in his best version, could be quite demanding for Clarke, who is very strong and tenacious but relies on simple tactical approaches. Therefore, this looks like a duel that could be quite entertaining.

Ball and McCann
In principle, the main card of this event will be completed by fights for two undefeated featherweight prospects. One of them is Dennis “The Menace” McCann 12(6KO)-0, who will face his biggest test to date in his first ten-round bout. His opponent will be former British super bantamweight title challenger James Beech Jr. 14(2KO)-2, a boxer that, considering the meritorious performance he put on against Brad Foster, should give McCann useful experience.

The other featherweight fighter will be the powerful Nick Ball 15(8KO)-0, who after destroying Isaac Lowe in the support of the card Fury-Whyte will put his knockout capacity to test against a resistant rival like the Namibian Nathanael Kakololo 14(6KO)-3-1, who went ten rounds as a visitor against good fighters like Andranik Grigoryan and Oleg Malinovskiy.

This event will be broadcast in the UK on BT Sport 1 on Saturday from 19:00, 14:00 ET/11:00 PT.
