La idea de Top Rank para este sábado era que dos boxeadores relevantes actualmente para el boxeo puertorriqueño como el peso supermedio Edgar “The Chosen One” Berlanga 19(16KO)-0 y el peso superwélter Xander Zayas encabezasen una velada desde la sala Hulu en el Madison Square Garden de Nueva York, Estados Unidos. Con ello se pretendía hacer algo así como un preparativo para el Desfile del día de Puerto Rico, que tendrá lugar en Nueva York el domingo.
Sin embargo, Zayas padeció una enfermedad que le impidió estar en condiciones para encarar su programado combate ante el uzbeko Ravshan Hudaynazarov, por lo que ahora el nombre que sustentará la cartelera será el citado Berlanga, que se enfrentará en el encuentro estelar al exretador mundial colombiano Roamer Alexis Angulo 27(23KO)-2(1).
La lógica detrás de este duelo resulta bastante simple de entender. Después de que Berlanga viese cortada su famosa racha de knockouts ante Demond Nicholson, de que fuese derribado y venciese ajustadamente a Marcelo Cóceres y de que se anotase un controvertido triunfo ante Steve Rolls, ahora Top Rank le ha situado delante a un boxeador mucho más lento y menos móvil ante el que el invicto pegador podrá buscar una contundente victoria que le permita recuperar impulso.
En este sentido se debe subrayar que Angulo ha sufrido sus únicas derrotas ante dos campeones mundiales como Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramírez y David Benavídez, ante quienes perdió ampliamente: Zurdo le ganó casi todos los asaltos en las cartulinas de los jueces y Benavídez le obligó a abandonar en el décimo round. Por lo tanto, si Berlanga lograse un KOT sobre Angulo, especialmente antes del décimo asalto, Top Rank tendrían algo en lo que apoyar sus promociones para respaldar las aspiraciones del púgil en el peso supermedio.
De todos modos, aunque sobre el papel se espera que Berlanga pueda obtener la victoria, su racha de nada convincentes actuaciones ha hecho que Angulo no esté muy lejos de él en las apuestas (a unos 3 euros por euro apostado). En esto también ha tenido que ver que Angulo es un boxeador fuerte, experimentado, con buena pegada, que logró derrotar contra pronóstico en Estados Unidos al prospecto Anthony Sims Jr. y que antes de ser arrollado por Benavídez logró presionarle y atacarle en las cuerdas, aunque con limitados éxitos.
Dicho esto, el problema que ha tenido Berlanga en sus combates ante Cóceres y Rolls es que sus oponentes ofrecieron un dinamismo con el que no pudo lidiar debidamente, siendo esto inesperado en el caso del canadiense, que normalmente había mostrado una considerable falta de movilidad. Por ello, si ahora se enfrenta a un Angulo que no se caracteriza precisamente por su agilidad y que difícilmente podrá abrir el ring y contragolpear, Berlanga debería encontrar oportunidades fáciles para impactar sus duros ganchos zurdos y directos diestros buscando el knockout.
Quizás si se sobreconfiase en sus cargas Berlanga podría toparse con algún puño contundente o quizás, si intenta mostrar mejora técnica cediendo la iniciativa incoherentemente, podría darle a Angulo un margen para que generase más trabajo del esperado. Con todo, si Berlanga ocupa con firmeza el centro del ring y se apoya en su pegada con frecuencia y algo de lógica, debería poder sobrepasar a un rival con limitado ritmo y sin demasiada profundidad de recursos.
El combate Berlanga-Angulo será emitido en Estados Unidos por ESPN, ESPN Deportes y ESPN+ el sábado desde las 22:30 ET/19:30 PT, las 4:30 de la madrugada del sábado al domingo en España, mientras que la cartelera inicial comenzará hacia las 18:00 ET/15:00 PT, las 00:00 en hora española.

Top Rank’s idea for this Saturday was to put two boxers currently relevant for Puerto Rican boxing, the super middleweight Edgar «The Chosen One» Berlanga 19(16KO)-0 and the super welterweight Xander Zayas, as protagonists of a doubleheader from the Hulu Theater at the Madison Square Garden in New York, United States. This was intended to be something like a preparation for the Puerto Rican Day Parade, which will take place in New York on Sunday.
However, Zayas suffered an illness that prevented him from being in condition to face his scheduled fight against the Uzbek Ravshan Hudaynazarov, so now the name that will support the bill will be the aforementioned Berlanga, who will face in the main match the Colombian, former world challenger, Roamer Alexis Angulo 27(23KO)-2(1).
The logic behind this match is quite simple to understand. After Berlanga’s famous knockout streak ended facing Demond Nicholson, after he was knocked down and narrowly beat Marcelo Cóceres and after he obtained a controversial win over Steve Rolls, Top Rank has now put him in front of a much slower and less mobile boxer against which the undefeated puncher will be able to seek a knockout victory to regain momentum.
In this sense, it should be remembered that Angulo has suffered his only defeats facing two world champions such as Gilberto «Zurdo» Ramírez and David Benavídez, against whom he lost widely: Zurdo won almost all the rounds on the judges’ scorecards and Benavídez forced him to quit in the tenth round. Therefore, if Berlanga were to beat Angulo by TKO, especially before the 10th round, Top Rank would have something to work in his promotions to support the fighter’s aspirations at super middleweight.
In any case, despite Berlanga is expected to win, his consecutive unconvincing performances are part of the reasons that Angulo is not far behind him in the betting odds (Angulo is a 3/1 underdog). On the other hand, Angulo is a strong, experienced boxer with a good punch, who beat by upset Anthony Sims Jr. and who, before being overwhelmed by Benavídez, managed to attack him on the ropes, although with limited success.
That said, the problem that Berlanga has had in his bouts against Cóceres and Rolls is that his opponents used a mobility he was unable to contain properly, this being unexpected in the case of the Canadian. Therefore, now facing Angulo, who hasn’t great agility and who will hardly be able to move and counterpunch, Berlanga should find easy opportunities to connect his hard left hooks and straight right hands looking for the knockout.
Perhaps, if Berlanga is overconfident in his offensives he could run into a hard punch or perhaps, if he tries to show technical improvement by giving up the initiative inappropriately, he could give Angulo some margin to generate more work than expected. However, if Berlanga stays in the center of the ring firmly and uses his power with frequent attacks, he should be able to overcome an opponent with a limited pace and not much depth of tactical resources.
The Berlanga-Angulo fight will be aired in the United States on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+ on Saturday from 10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. PT (the prelims will be broadcasted by ESPN+ from approximately 6:00 p.m. ET/3:00 p.m PT), while in the UK the card will be televised by Sky Sports Main Event from 2:30 a.m.
