El insigne contendiente superwélter Charles Conwell se anotó KOT sobre el mexicano Abraham Juárez

No había margen para las sorpresas: enfrentándose una piedra de toque con no mucho encaje a un contendiente de grandísimo nivel y mucha pegada, la victoria antes del límite del segundo era inevitable. Así fue, y el olímpico estadounidense Charles “Bad News” Conwell 17(13KO)-0 terminó por KOT en el tercer round con el mexicano Abraham “Pitbull” Juárez 19(8KO)-10(6).
Desde el comienzo Conwell buscó acortar los espacios e intentar generar daños cruciales, estando incluso dispuesto a dejarse alcanzar con tal de poder conectar sus manos. Moviéndose y con ciertas acciones defensivas, Juárez llegó al segundo asalto, pero entonces varias peligrosas derechas le golpearon antes de que una explosiva ofensiva con ganchos zurdos, uppercut diestro y directo le llevasen a tocar el tapiz. Juárez fue duramente hostigado en la reanudación, pero resistió sin caer hasta casi el final del episodio, momento en el que un par de derechas ilegales a la nuca y una serie de hooks le hicieron poner la rodilla en la lona.
El mexicano se pudo poner en pie y, con el tiempo de round agotado, llegó al siguiente asalto, pero entonces un gancho zurdo abajo le dañó y le obligó a retroceder. Tras recibir una derecha e intentar esquivar con la cintura, Juárez volvió a arrodillarse en el tapiz, deteniendo el árbitro el combate.
Tomar como referencia este enfrentamiento no sería justo en ningún sentido para valorar a Conwell pero, más allá de que este triunfo era completamente previsible, este boxeador es innegablemente una amenaza latente para la parte alta del peso superwélter.
El propio púgil ha afirmado que muchos miembros de la parte alta no le están prestando atención y que cuando lo hagan será demasiado tarde, algo que perfectamente podría ser así teniendo en cuenta que Conwell es verdaderamente contundente, fuerte y técnicamente sólido, que tuvo una gran carrera amateur y que con sólo 24 años todavía tiene mucho tiempo para mejorar su boxeo. Por el momento, Conwell afirma que su objetivo ya es alcanzar una eliminatoria en el último tramo del año ante un boxeador de probada valía como un excampeón mundial o un exaspirante.

There was no room for surprises: in a fight between a journeyman with not much resistance and a very high level contender with a lot of power, the stoppage victory of the latter was inevitable. So it was, and the American Olympian Charles “Bad News” Conwell 17(13KO)-0 finished by TKO in the third round his fight against the Mexican Abraham “Pitbull” Juárez 19(8KO)-10(6).
From the opening bell Conwell looked to shorten the spaces and try to generate crucial damage, even allowing his rival to hit him in order to connect his own hands. Moving around and with some defensive actions, Juarez made it into the second round, but then several dangerous right hands hit him before an explosive attack with left hooks, right uppercut and straight shots made him fall on his knees. Juarez was harshly punished after the restart, but resisted without falling until almost the end of the episode, moment in which a couple of illegal right hands to the back of the head and a combination of hooks made him put a knee on the canvas again.
The Mexican was able to get to his feet and, with the round finished, reach the third, but then a left hook down hurt him, forcing him to step back. After receiving a right hand and trying to dodge with his waist, Juárez put a knee on the canvas again, so the referee stopped the bout.
Taking this clash as a reference would not be fair in any sense to assess Conwell’s level but, beyond the fact that this victory was completely predictable, this boxer is undeniably a latent threat to the top of the super welterweight division.
The American boxer has stated that many members of the upper part of the 154 lb division are not paying attention to him and that when they do it will be too late for them, something that could perfectly be the case considering that Conwell is truly forceful, strong and technically solid, that he had a great amateur career and that being only 24 years old he still has a lot of time to improve his boxing. For the time being, Conwell says his current goal is to reach an eliminator in the last stretch of the year against a boxer of proven quality such as a former world champion or a former title challenger.
