Erislandy Lara derrotó por KOT a “Spike” O’Sullivan, pero no está lejos del retiro

Desde antes de este combate estaba claro que el final de la carrera del cubano Erislandy “The American Dream” Lara 29(17KO)-3-3 no se haría esperar mucho, sumándose su largo recorrido amateur, 14 años como profesional y varias duras guerras. No obstante, su retiro quizás esté incluso más cerca de lo que se pensaba a pesar de su completamente previsible victoria sobre el irlandés Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan 31(21KO)-5(4), que esta vez sucumbió en el octavo asalto.
Las combinaciones de rectos de Lara llegaron bien contra su contrincante, pero el cubano ha perdido su agilidad de piernas y, por lo tanto, su control de los espacios se ha reducido drásticamente. Por ello, Sullivan logró alcanzar la distancia corta y media-corta con facilidad y lanzar sus hooks incluso cuando Lara trató de crear espacios.
Inicialmente en el cuerpo a cuerpo Lara pudo ser más eficaz que “Spike” con sus potentes y bien ejecutadas combinaciones de uppercut y hook. Con todo, poco a poco el voluntarioso irlandés comenzó a llegar con demasiada facilidad y cadencia con sus curvos en corta, especialmente abajo, momento en el que Lara sacó un fantástico directo de izquierda a la contra que dañó y derribó a O’Sullivan en el cuarto asalto. No obstante, aunque lo estremeció de nuevo en el quinto y el sexto round, Lara no pudo terminar con él, logrando Sullivan mantenerse en los intercambios en corta y tener ciertos éxitos trabajando con sus hooks.
El excampeón comenzó a dar signos de cansancio y a tener momentos casi preocupantes, pero en el final del séptimo asalto otro recto zurdo dañó seriamente a O’Sullivan. Finalmente, alcanzado el ya el octavo episodio, Lara consiguió desequilibrar a su oponente con un duro directo zurdo, haciéndole retroceder desequilibrado y atacándole con un golpe recto más antes de que el árbitro detuviese el combate.
Como Lara tiene talento innato, excelentes cualidades técnicas desarrolladas y enorme experiencia, era impensable que no pudiese derrotar a un O’Sullivan casi tan veterano como él, que toma muchos riesgos, que no tiene buena defensa y que cuenta con un nivel muy inferior. Sin embargo, aunque Lara pudo marcar la diferencia con su precisión y destreza, después de ver el combate es razonable pensar que un peso medio de élite fuerte y en buen estado tendría una clara opción de derrotarle si logra crear una pelea de alta exigencia física.
Sea como sea, Lara posee el cinturón de subcampeón WBA del peso medio y, si Golovkin se retira después del tercer combate contra Canelo, se convertirá en monarca de pleno derecho, haciendo que todavía sea más interesante para PBC un duelo entre él y Jermall Charlo que lleva tiempo sobre la mesa.

Even before this fight it was clear that the end of the career of Cuban Erislandy «The American Dream» Lara 29(17KO)-3-3 was not far away taking into account his long time as an amateur, his 14 years as a professional and several hard wars. However, his retirement may be even closer than previously thought despite his completely predictable victory over Ireland’s Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan 31(21KO)-5(4), who this time succumbed in the eighth round.
Lara’s combinations of straight punches landed well against his opponent, but the Cuban has lost his leg agility and therefore his control of the distance has been drastically reduced. As a result, Sullivan was able to reach the close and mid-close range with ease and throw his hooks even when Lara tried to create space.
Initially, in the exchanges Lara was more effective than “Spike” due to his power and his good punching technique through uppercut-hook combinations. Gradually, though, the willful Irishman began to connect his hooks with too much ease and frequency, moment in which Lara landed a fantastic straight left counter that hurt and dropped O’Sullivan in the fourth round. However, though he rocked him again in the fifth and sixth rounds, Lara couldn’t finish the fight, with Sullivan managing to stay in close range exchanging and having some success working with hooks.
The former champion began to show signs of fatigue and had almost worrying moments, but at the end of the seventh round another left hand seriously hurt O’Sullivan. Finally, in the eighth episode, Lara made his opponent loose balance with a hard left, forcing the referee stoppage with a new straight punch.
As Lara has innate talent, excellent developed technical qualities and enormous experience, it was unthinkable that he could not defeat O’Sullivan, who is almost as veteran as him, who takes many risks, who does not have good defense and who has a much lower level. However, while Lara was able to make a difference with his precision and skill, after watching the fight it’s reasonable to think that a strong and fit elite middleweight would have a clear shot at defeating him in a physical battle.
Be that as it may, Lara holds a secondary WBA belt in the middleweight division so, if Golovkin retires after the third fight against Canelo, he will become a full-fledged monarch, making a duel between him and Jermall Charlo even more interesting for PBC.
