Tervel Pulev fue claramente derrotado por Sergey Kovalev, Kubrat Pulev venció ampliamente a Jerry Forrest

El peso pesado Tony Yoka no fue el único medallista olímpico que se estampó contra su primer reto significativo como profesional el sábado, puesto que el bronce olímpico búlgaro Tervel Pulev 16(13KO)-1 perdió también su invicto. En el caso de Pulev, éste fue vencido a manos del ruso, excampeón mundial semipesado, Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev 35(29KO)-4(3)-1, que tuvo un exitoso debut en el peso crucero con una merecida decisión unánime. Las puntuaciones fueron de 97-93 y doble 98-92.
Aunque Kovalev tuvo algún gesto temprano que pudo dibujar alguna duda sobre su condición física, algo a lo que contribuyó que fuese movido ligeramente en el segundo asalto, de entrada el ruso tenía la experiencia y la habilidad como para ser más que competitivo con sus certeros rectos ante un Pulev que generalmente no sostuvo prolongadas ofensivas y que no logró lidiar de manera satisfactoria con el boxeo en larga de su rival.
A Pulev le costó tanto equiparar los directos con espacios del excampeón y tuvo tantas dificultades para acortar la distancia que Kovalev se impuso con diferencia en la primera mitad a través de sus potentes jabs, sus uno-dos, sus dos-uno y sus directos aislados.
Pulev necesitaba añadir más ritmo al combate para intentar desgastar a su contrincante pero, más allá de algún buen gancho de mano adelantada, no consiguió evitar que “Krusher” le martillesase con sus directos al ataque y a la contra. De hecho, los rectos de Kovalev seguían llegando nítidos cuando Pulev sacudió un tanto a su rival en el séptimo con sus curvos, además de propinarle un flagrante codazo en la cara. Es verdad que el ruso hacia el final comenzó a desgastarse y de nuevo fue un tanto desequilibrado por las manos de su oponente, pero Pulev en lugar de añadir más presión y trabajo perdió tiempo permaneciendo en la distancia larga sin lanzar ofensivas y bastante centrado en contraatacar.
Si entonces, en lugar de correr por el ring esperando las entradas del excampeón, hubiese trabajado en corta, Pulev podría haber logrado más éxitos que eventuales derechas o hooks a la contra. Pero malgastando incluso el último round desplazándose no logró generar ni mucho menos la merma que necesitaba para ganar.
Sin duda, en una pelea ante un buen peso crucero que tome riesgos constantes, que le presione con firmeza y que no le permita mandar desde el centro del ring, el veterano Kovalev seguramente se verá en muchas dificultades a largo plazo en la pugna. No obstante, mientras se mida a oponentes que le dejen boxear en larga, que duden tácticamente o que carezcan de técnica, su destreza le permitirá mantener en pie un poco más sus aspiraciones en el peso crucero.
Kubrat Pulev dominó a Forrest
En el semifondo, el hermano de Tervel, el exaspirante mundial del peso pesado Kubrat “The Cobra” Pulev 29(14KO)-2(2), logró una amplísima victoria unánime (doble 99-91 y un 98-92) sobre el estadounidense Jerry “Slugger” Forrest 26(20KO)-5(1)-2, lo que seguramente le valdrá para recibir alguna buena propuesta de cara a los últimos meses de la temporada.
Contrastando vivamente con la gran imagen ofrecida ante Michael Hunter, el irregular Forrest ofreció esta vez su peor versión, no acertando ni siquiera remotamente con su elección estratégica. Y es que eligiendo renunciar a la iniciativa ante un boxeador de distancia larga y de estilo “soviético” como Pulev, la pelea estuvo cuesta arriba para Forrest desde el comienzo. “The Cobra” pudo escoger cómodamente sus firmes jabs y sus potentes derechas rectas para castigar a Forret, quien en cambio cuando contestó con sus hooks en corta logró incluso estremecer puntualmente a su contrincante.
Sin embargo, ni esto ni la lentitud de su rival le dieron una pista a Forrest de lo que debía hacer para intentar ganar, por lo que fue golpeado y sacudido de forma temible por derechazos hasta que terminó seriamente dañado y gravemente desgastado, siendo lo más sorprendente que el local pudiese aguantar tantos brutales rectos sin caer. Tardíamente, y casi sin fuerzas, Forrest incluso intentó algún ataque, pero la sombra del lucky punch ni siquiera se intuyó en el horizonte.

Heavyweight Tony Yoka wasn’t the only Olympic medalist to fail into his first significant challenge as a pro on this Saturday, as Bulgarian Olympic bronze medalist Tervel Pulev 16(13KO)-1 also lost his unbeaten record. In Pulev’s case, he was defeated at the hands of Russian former light heavyweight world champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev 35(29KO)-4(3)-1, who made a successful cruiserweight debut with a deserved unanimous decision win. The scores were 97-93 and double 98-92.
Although Kovalev had a body language that could cast some doubt on his physical condition, something to which contributed the fact that he was slightly shook in the second round, the Russian had the experience and ability to be more than competitive with his accurate straight punches against Pulev, who generally did not throw prolonged offensives and who did not dealt satisfactorily with his opponent’s long-range boxing.
It was so difficult for Pulev to avoid the straight punches from the former champion and he had so many difficulties to shorten the distance that Kovalev was clearly superior in the first half through his powerful jabs, his one-two, his two-one and his isolated right hands.
Pulev needed to add more rhythm to the fight to try to wear his opponent down but, apart from a few good lead hooks, he couldn’t prevent “Krusher” from hammering him with his straight punches attacking and countering. In fact, Kovalev’s hand continued to look sharp as Pulev rocked him in the seventh with a hook, as well as delivering a blatant elbow to the face. It is true that, towards the end, the Russian began to get tired and was again somewhat staggered by the hands of his opponent, but Pulev, instead of adding more pressure, wasted time staying in the long distance without throwing offensives and rather focused on counterattacking.
If then, instead of running around the ring waiting for the former champion’s attacks, he had worked had, Pulev might have had more successes than occasional right hands or hooks on the counter. But wasting even the last round moving around, he wasn’t close to generate the wear needed to win.
Surely, in a fight against a good cruiserweight who takes constant risks, that puts hard pressure and that doesn’t allow him to box from the center of the ring, the veteran Kovalev would have a lot of problems in the long run. However, as long as he’s up against opponents who let him box from distance, that are tactically hesitant or that lack technique, his skill will allow him to keep going on a little further at cruiserweight.
Kubrat Pulev dominated Forrest
In the co-main event, Tervel’s brother, former world heavyweight challenger Kubrat «The Cobra» Pulev 29(14KO)-2(2), obtained a wide unanimous victory (double 99-91 and one 98-92) over the American Jerry “Slugger” Forrest 26(20KO)-5(1)-2, which will surely give him access to a good opportunity in the last months of the season.
Contrasting sharply with the great performance he had against Michael Hunter, the irregular Forrest offered his worst version this time, failing completely in his strategic approach. Choosing to relinquish the initiative to a “Soviet” style long distance fighter like Pulev, the bout was very difficult for Forrest from the start. “The Cobra” was able to comfortably select his firm jabs and his powerful straight hands to punish Forrest, who on the contrary when he answered with hooks at close range even shook his opponent.
However, neither this nor his opponent’s slowness gave Forrest a clue as to what he needed to do to try to win, so he was pummeled and rocked by right hands until he was severely hurt and badly worn, being the most surprising that the local could resist so many brutal punches without falling. Belatedly, and almost without energies, Forrest tried some attacks, but the shadow of the lucky punch did not even appear on the horizon.
