Former world titlist Eduard Troyanovsky became Russian super lightweight champion

Glavclub, Moscow, Russia. Russian championship for the vacant super lightweight belt.

Since losing a close and questionable split decision in 2018 in a super lightweight world championship against Kiryl Relikh, former world champion Eduard “The Eagle” Troyanovsky 30(25KO)-3(1) has not had a relevant career: his greatest recent victory was controversial and against Renald Garrido, while in his last bout he suffered a clear defeat to the prospect Valeriy Oganisyan. For this reason, Troyanovsky needed to return to winning ways, something he achieved by defeating by TKO in the third round Rustem Memetov 8(3KO)-3(3), who had not boxed for a decade.

Despite his long inactivity and his height disadvantage, Memetov tried to be competitive, taking the initiative and landing some good left overhands to the face and straight punches to the body. However, the hard-hitting Troyanovsky hurt his opponent with a left hook already in the first round and thereafter connected firm jabs and dangerous straight rights. A clash of heads caused a cut in «Troya», although his opponent also ended up cut shortly after. Be that as it may, between the former champion’s power shots, Memetov put pressure on his opponent and landed some short straight punches before, in the break between the third and fourth rounds, his corner indicated that he could not continue.

At this point in his career it seems highly unlikely that Troyanovsky could be once again a top boxer in the super lightweight division. However, he is a boxer who stays in good shape, that has some skill and that has experience and past successes. Therefore, until his performance decrease completely and he ceases to be competent, he will surely be used as a test for prospects or for fighters with aspirations but insufficient experience.
