Preview: Jermell Charlo and Brian Castaño fight in rematch for the undisputed super welterweight title

The super lightweight is currently the subject of a lot of conversations, as it is considered a division with a lot of potential but stagnant, with a number of good fighters crowding the top of the rankings waiting for Josh Taylor to vacate his four belts. However, there is a division that is as paralyzed or more than super lightweight: the super welterweight division, in which there has been only one world championship since February 2021, something that has made the eliminators and the challengers to pile up waiting for their big opportunity.

The only world championship that has taken place at 154 lb in the last 15 months has been the fight for the undisputed super welterweight crown between American Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo 34(18KO)-1-1 and the Argentine Brian “El Boxi” Castaño 17(12KO)-0-2, a fight that ended in a very controversial draw. Leaving aside what the propagandists may say, the fact is that Castaño deserved to come out of that fight with his arm raised in the opinion of the majority of fans and the impartial analysts.

The decision to give a draw to protect the interests of the American star not only deprived Castaño of a deserved victory and the undisputed crown, but also took away from him a place in boxing history and the possibility of laying a firm foundation for a future induction into the Hall of Fame. Some say that rematch is the right thing to repair an injustice. However, the past shows us that rematches often do not solve an unfair verdict, but often make the situation worse. In fact, the only true fair solution would have been changing the result to give Castaño the victory.

Be that as it may, since the organizations and commissions are not very keen on changing controversial verdicts, there is no choice but to focus on this Saturday’s fight at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, United States.

In the betting odds, Charlo is the favorite, which could be surprising considering how he was beaten for quite a few rounds by Castaño’s punching rate. However, this is quite rational. The draw in the first match clearly showed that neither PBC nor the elite of the boxing industry intend to allow Charlo to lose this crucial bout for his career if they can help it. Thus, and having a good chin, if «Iron Man» adjusts and becomes more competitive, he could obtain the verdict in the second fight.

In this sense, it should be remembered that Charlo has great advantages in height and reach, in hand speed and in one punch power, so he has many elements in his favor to improve his previous performance, a margin that is not so great for his rival.

That is to say, in the first clash it seemed that Castaño, beyond a few moments of doubt and certain defensive oversights, was close to doing everything he could possibly do, attacking relentlessly and throwing punches with great frequency supported with very good pressure and even better blocks. On the other hand, Charlo was far from his best version, since, aside from the couple of moments in which he hurt and staggered the Argentine, he was pushed towards the ropes with ease and his reaction and variety of resources were clearly improvable.

If Charlo’s team has studied well the mistakes and exploits this rematch, which is designed exclusively so that he has a second chance and can complete the plan drawn up by PBC for him, he should try to use more angles and more punch output to try to be closer to the center of the ring and, above all, create «traps» through feints to try to get decisive success counterpunching.

As for Castaño, taking into account that he is a close-mid range boxer with high pace and that he will try to seek the knockout to avoid controversies against a fighter with more one punch power, he will have no choice but to try to press with the maximum ferocity, creating a physical fight in which to take advantage of his strength and his smaller size. However, this possibly could lead him to taking more risks that could be exploited by a Charlo, who will focus a good part of his efforts on looking for decisive counterattacks.

This will be possibly an exciting and entertaining fight, and it is evident that if Castaño was able to have a great performance once, he can have another one on Saturday night. All in all, keeping in mind past precedents like the Ward-Kovalev bouts, it’s very possible that Charlo or the ring officials will find a way to fulfill the plans of the elite, who wants to see him with the four titles of the division in his possession.

An eliminator-formality for Ennis
Anyone who has paid enough attention to him knows that the American welterweight Jaron “Boots” Ennis 28(26KO)-0 is one of the biggest pound-for-pound prospects in the world and that he has so much talent, technique and finishing ability that he can even aspire to defeat Spence or Crawford. For this reason, his fight against Custio “War Machine” Clayton 19(12KO)-0-1, who had a draw with Sergey Lipinets (whom Ennis beat until the TKO), seems little more than a formality in the climb of this undefeated to the top.

Certainly, the fights are won in the ring and not on paper and Clayton is a boxer of good level, capable and with undeniable qualities. However, in each pugilistic aspect the electric Ennis has a great advantage, so it seems very likely that he could win the bout, in which he could achieve the triumph boxing in many different ways. Thus, the really important thing about the fight is that it is a final eliminator and that it will serve the winner to be named mandatory challenger for Spence by the strict IBF, which will ensure him a huge opportunity sooner rather than later.

The main card of this evening broadcast in the United States by Showtime will begin with a super bantamweight clash in which the young and undefeated Mexican Kevin “Chacal” González 24(13KO)-0-1 will debut in the United States and will try to impress by facing the Puerto Rican Emanuel “Bebo” Rivera 19(12KO)-2.

This event will be broadcast in the United States on Showtime from 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT on Saturday, 2:00 a.m. in UK time.
