Las victorias del peso supermedio italiano Daniele “King Toretto” Scardina 20(16KO)-0 en sus cinco apariciones en veladas de Matchroom Boxing y OPI emitidas por DAZN le han dado a conocer internacionalmente y le han permitido escalar hasta una posición de 8º IBF (virtualmente 6º) y de 9º WBO. Así, y siendo un púgil con un buen porcentaje de knockouts y llamativos números en su récord, el futuro podría parecer muy prometedor para Scardina, si bien esta no es precisamente una lectura profunda y exacta de su situación.
Aunque de momento ha evitado la derrota, Scardina ha mostrado de forma repetida importantes brechas (incluso en sus triunfos más contundentes) y ha padecido notables dificultades, destacando el esfuerzo que tuvo que realizar para vencer por la mínima a Alessandro Goddi y sus apuros ante César Núñez. Estos y otros momentos de su trayectoria reciente han sugerido que, aunque Scardina quizás podría llegar a tener un buen recorrido como titular UE o incluso alcanzar el título europeo si se da una situación ideal, de ningún modo serían grandes sus posibilidades de victoria ante la cumbre del peso supermedio internacional.
Pese a ser esto evidente, de nuevo en su próximo combate Scardina peleará con un título menor WBO en juego tratando de acercarse más al top 5 de dicho organismo. No obstante, contrastando con esta insistente pretensión de escalar en el ranking de la Organización, nos encontramos con que se le ha situado delante un adversario que no tiene un gran nivel: el italiano Giovanni De Carolis 30(14KO)-10(2)-1, veterano púgil que recientemente se ha visto todavía más ralentizado de lo que acostumbraba y que en los últimos cuatro años ha sumado, básicamente, triunfos trabajados ante púgiles de nivel medio y una amplísima derrota ante el hábil Lerrone Richards.
Es precisamente este tropiezo el que parece dar una pista de cuál puede ser el objetivo real de la estrategia de Matchroom, dando la sensación de que se está posicionando bien en las listas a Scardina únicamente para que pronto un insigne púgil de la escuadra de Hearn, como Lerrone Richards, lo aproveche para derrotarle, catapultándose hacia la cumbre del ranking.
En cualquier caso, dado que Scardina tiene mucho que mejorar en su boxeo y se enfrenta a un púgil experimentado y competente pero venido a menos, el enfrentamiento hasta cierto punto podría considerarse bien emparejado, pudiendo ofrecer asaltos contendidos. Y es que, De Carolis es un púgil fuerte, con encaje y batallador que podría aprovechar los desajustes tácticos de Scardina para llegar con algunos buenos hooks, si bien el invicto favorito tiene un margen en ambición, frescura y potencia que debería decantar la pugna a su favor.
En sus peleas ante Richards y Crivello, De Carolis pareció lidiar mal con la movilidad y el boxeo en la distancia larga por su acrecentada lentitud, así que si Scardina usa bien sus piernas, su jab y escoge los golpes de poder de la manera adecuada debería poder superar el trabajo de su oponente, que pondrá tenacidad y voluntad pero que quizás no tenga el cambio de marcha necesario para marcar la diferencia. Por otro lado, si Scardina busca un planteamiento agresivo e intercambia quizás pueda volver a recibir manos muy nítidas, aunque su gran ventaja en pegada igualmente podría ser el factor determinante.
Romero vs. Cecchi
El Scardina-De Carolis será el estelar de una velada desde el Allianz Cloud de Milán, Italia, que se desarrollará el viernes, siendo su combate co-estelar el campeonato de Europa del peso supergallo entre la titular española Mary Romero 7(2KO)-2 y la aspirante italiana Maria Cecchi 7(2KO)-0. Este es un buen duelo entre boxeadoras con cualidades y que alcanzan esta quizás mayor oportunidad de sus carreras después de grandes actuaciones: Romero ante Amy Timlin y Cecchi ante Bec Connolly.
Además, dado que Romero es 7ª WBA y 13ª WBC, un triunfo podría llevar a la ganadora muy cerca de una gran pugna en la división, algo que, por otro lado, sería factible simplemente por el hecho de que impresionar a Eddie Hearn y a sus colaboradores en una de sus veladas podría verse recompensado.
Aunque por su gran ventaja en experiencia y por poseer la corona europea Romero podría ser considerada favorita, quizás en las casas de apuestas (todavía no han sido publicadas las cuotas) parta por delante Cecchi, puesto que es una hábil zurda, 10 años más joven, que combate como local y que parece tener más velocidad.
En principio, debería resultar crucial la distancia en que se desarrolle el choque. Si bien Romero es versátil, Cecchi podría imponer sus directos zurdos y sus ágiles reposicionamientos boxeando con espacios en un duelo táctico, mientras que la española podría tener mejores resultados si consigue imponer su fuerza y contundencia con reducidos espacios en una batalla. Sea como sea, este es un choque que se presenta interesante y del que tendría que salir una sólida monarca continental.
En cuanto al resto de la velada, destaca un campeonato de Italia por el vacante cinturón del peso supergallo, título por el que combatirán el imbatido Vincenzo “Winchester” La Femina 10(5KO)-0 y el zurdo Matteo Lecca 9(4KO)-2. Sin duda, es posible que Lecca ofrezca una actuación repleta de voluntad de victoria, pero sobre el papel La Femina está en un nivel boxístico superior y tendría que poder usar su destreza y su técnica para imponerse.
Por otro lado, el peso wélter Maxim Prodan 19(15KO)-1-1, que no boxea desde su derrota de septiembre ante Florian Marku, se enfrentará al competente venezolano Luis Enrique Romero 10(6KO)-5(1)-1, que llega de derrotar a Jonathan Alonso.

The victories of the Italian super middleweight Daniele “King Toretto” Scardina 20(16KO)-0 in his five appearances on Matchroom Boxing and OPI shows broadcasted by DAZN have made him known internationally and have allowed him to climb to a position of 8th IBF (virtually 6th) and 9th WBO. Thus, and being a fighter with a good knockout ratio and striking numbers in his record, the future could look very promising for Scardina, although this is not exactly a deep and accurate analysis of his situation.
Although so far he has avoided defeat, Scardina has repeatedly shown important flaws (even in his most convincing triumphs) and has suffered serious difficulties, standing out the effort he had to make to beat Alessandro Goddi by a minimum margin and his troubles against César Núñez. These and other moments in his recent career have suggested that, although Scardina could perhaps have a good run as EU titleholder or even reach the European belt if the situation was ideal, by no means he will have great chances of victory against the top of the super middleweight division.
Despite this being obvious, Scardina will fight again in his next bout for a minor WBO title trying to get closer to the top 5 of that organization. However, contrasting with this insistent attempt to climb the Organization’s ranking, his opponent will not have a great level: he will clash against the Italian Giovanni De Carolis 30(14KO)-10(2)-1, a veteran boxer who has recently slowed down even more than he used to and who in the last four years has basically added hard-fought wins against mid-level boxers and a wide defeat against the skillful Lerrone Richards.
It is precisely this setback that gives a clue about what the real objective of Matchroom’s strategy may be, seeming that Scardina is being ranked well only for a distinguished fighter from Hearn’s squad, like Lerrone Richards, to take advantage of it by defeating him.
In any case, given that Scardina has a lot to improve in his boxing and is up against an experienced and competent fighter but far from his prime, the bout could be considered well matched to some degree and capable of offering contested rounds. De Carolis is a strong, fit and brave fighter who could take advantage of Scardina’s tactical mistakes to connect good hooks, although the undefeated favorite has a margin in ambition, freshness and power that should decide the fight to his favor.
In his fights against Richards and Crivello, De Carolis had obvious difficulties dealing with mobility and long range boxing due to his increased slowness, so if Scardina uses his legs and jab and selects power shots properly he should be able to overcome the work of his opponent, who will put tenacity and willpower but who should not be able to change the pace to make a difference. On the other hand, if Scardina goes for an aggressive approach and exchanges, maybe he will get hit again with very clear hands, although his punching power could still be the determining factor.
Romero vs. Cecchi
The fight Scardina-De Carolis will be the main one of an evening from the Allianz Cloud in Milan, Italy, which will take place on Friday. The co-feature will be a European super bantamweight championship between the Spanish titleholder Mary Romero 7(2KO)-2 and the Italian challenger Maria Cecchi 7(2KO)-0. This is a nice duel between boxers with qualities and who reach this perhaps greatest opportunity of their careers after good performances: Romero against Amy Timlin and Cecchi against Bec Connolly.
Also, given that Romero is 7th WBA and 13th WBC, a win could bring the winner very close to a major fight in the division, something that, on the other hand, would be feasible simply because impressing Eddie Hearn and his collaborators in one of their evenings could be rewarded.
Although due to her great advantage in experience, and being the champion, Romero could be considered the favorite, perhaps in the bookmakers (the odds have not yet been published) Cecchi will be the favorite, since she is a skillful southpaw, 10 years younger, who fights as a local and seems to have more speed.
In principle, the distance should be crucial in the clash. Although Romero is versatile, Cecchi could impose her left hands and her agility boxing with distance in a tactical duel, while the Spaniard could have better results if she takes advantage of her strength and forcefulness in a close-range battle. Be that as it may, this is a bout that appears interesting and from which a solid continental monarch should come out.
In the rest of the evening stands out an Italian championship for the vacant super bantamweight belt between the undefeated Vincenzo «Winchester» La Femina 10(5KO)-0 and the southpaw Matteo Lecca 9(4KO)-2. Surely, Lecca may deliver a performance full of ambition, but on paper La Femina is at a higher boxing level and he should be able to use his skill and his technique to prevail.
Finally, the welterweight Maxim Prodan 19(15KO)-1-1, who has not boxed since his September loss to Florian Marku, will face the competent Venezuelan Luis Enrique Romero 10(6KO)-5(1)-1, that comes from defeating Jonathan Alonso.
