Evidently, not all the statements by Bob Arum or any other major promoter can be considered true, since their plans are often kept hidden while they divert the attention with false informations. An example of this was when, a few months ago, it became obvious that Arum was going to pursue a match between Shakur Stevenson and Oscar Valdez but the promoter managed to fool many people into believing that his real goal was a bout Stevenson vs. Emmanuel Navarrete.

In any case, the fact is that Arum stated after Stevenson’s victory over Valdez that (contrary to what the unified title holder wishes) he was not going to allow his boxer to fight against the other two champions of the super featherweight division (whom he didn’t even name), pointing out that these were unknown to the public and that it would be impossible for them to generate interest and income in fights against the undefeated American.

However, regardless of the possibility that these words are mere promotional smoke screens and that he really does want Stevenson to pursuit the undisputed crown, there has been a confirmation that could change the perspectives. The company Matchroom Boxing has officially announced that on June 4, at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, United Kingdom, the British Olympian Joe Cordina will challenge the IBF super featherweight world champion, the Japanese Kenichi Ogawa.

Therefore, in the event that Cordina were to defeat and dethrone Ogawa, it would create a much more favorable scenario for a subsequent WBC-WBO-IBF unification, since the fight between monarchs against Stevenson could be promoted as a duel of skillful and undefeated Olympians, and it could generate significant revenue in the British Isles. In addition, while that clash was being organized, there would be time for the other champion of the division (the WBA titlist Roger Gutiérrez) to face a mandatory defense that could perhaps also end with the coronation of another more renowned boxer.

Regarding the Ogawa-Cordina card, Matchroom has also confirmed that in it Zelfa Barrett will try to become European super featherweight champion facing the titleholder Faroukh Kourbanov, match in which the former will be the favorite to win but in which he will face a resistant and competent fight who has never suffered a wide defeat.
