Pocos se dieron cuenta de que si los grandes propagandistas de la industria boxística habían dedicado tantos esfuerzos para alabar al cubano Yordenis Ugás 27(12KO)-5(1) no era debido a que creyesen en sus cualidades o que pensasen que podía unificar la división, sino que lo hicieron con el único objetivo de engrandecer a Errol Spence Jr. 28(22KO)-0 cuando le derrotase. Y es que el estadounidense, pese a las dudas sobre su estado de salud y a un susto puntual en el duelo, ofreció su mejor versión y, por lo tanto, fue muy superior a Ugás que, aunque logró evitar la amenaza de sus defensas obligatorias y accedió a una gran bolsa, en la unificación mostró estar por debajo del nivel de la cúspide de la división. La victoria de Spence llegó por KOT en el décimo round.
Spence utilizó al inicio el planteamiento táctico perfecto, aprovechando la baja cadencia de golpes de Ugás para atacarle con entradas y salidas con insistentes jabs y uno-dos. El cubano trató de usar su capacidad al contragolpe para conectar alguna mano nítida en directo diestro y hook zurdo al torso, pero la agilidad de Spence era tan superior y éste tenía tanta ventaja en velocidad que podía evitar muchas manos con sus pasos atrás y sus reposicionamientos laterales, volviendo al ataque rápidamente con su frecuencia de puños para superar los éxitos de su oponente.
Con el paso de los minutos, y con un control táctico claro, Spence decidió plantear intercambios en corta, pero lo hizo en general con bastante inteligencia, escogiendo el momento para lanzar sus combinaciones de hooks y el instante en que debía volver a poner espacios. Ugás estaba cada vez menos activo, así que en el quinto asalto Spence impactó prolongadamente ganchos arriba y abajo en corta contra su adversario, que pareció estar afectado por los puños.
Sin embargo, en el sexto episodio el estadounidense recibió un duro uppercut diestro que le quitó el protector bucal, girándose Spence confundido (y dando por hecho que el árbitro iba a pausar las acciones) antes de recibir un derechazo que le arrojó sobre el ensogado, debiendo haber recibido entonces cuenta según las normas por haber evitado las cuerdas que cayese. En cualquier caso, con knockdown o sin él, el resultado no habría cambiado, ya que en el resto del round Spence peleó con mucha dureza y en el séptimo episodio dejó tocado a Ugás con un uppercut zurdo, siendo castigado el cubano por fuertes uppercuts y hooks.
El ojo derecho de Ugás presentaba un muy mal estado y tuvo que ser revisado por el médico en el octavo asalto, en el que de nuevo, pese a su tenaz réplica, recibió durísimos golpes de poder de Spence. El castigo de “The Truth” continuó llegando en los siguientes minutos, destacando sus uppercuts, hasta que en el décimo asalto el médico indicó que el ojo de Ugás estaba demasiado mal como para permitirle continuar.
En estos momentos Spence y Terence Crawford tienen dos opciones, siendo una buscar la manera de pactar una pelea por la corona indiscutida del peso wélter y la otra arriesgarse a que uno de los peligrosos aspirantes de la división (Jaron Ennis, Vergil Ortiz, Avanesyan, Stanionis, etc.) les termine destronando. Ambas opciones son viables, pero sólo una de ellas les dará a Spence y Crawford la mayor bolsa de sus carreras, una pelea histórica en esta generación y la posibilidad de convertirse en una enorme figura boxística que pueda aspirar a tener un lugar entre los grandes de todos los tiempos en la división.

Few realized that if the great propagandists of the boxing industry had dedicated so much effort to praise the Cuban Yordenis Ugás 27(12KO)-5(1) it was not because they believed in his qualities or because they thought he could unify the division, but they did so with the sole objective of making Errol Spence Jr. 28(22KO)-0 look even greater when he defeated him. Despite the doubts about his health and a punctual scare in the duel, the American offered his best version and, therefore, was far superior to Ugás who, although he managed to avoid the threat of his mandatory defenses and accessed to a huge purse, in the unification he showed that he is below the level of the summit of the division. Spence’s victory came by TKO in the tenth round.
Spence used the perfect tactical approach at the start, taking advantage of Ugás’ low hitting rate to attack him coming in and out with insistent jabs and one-twos. The Cuban tried to use his counterpunching ability to land some clean straight right hands and left hooks to the torso, but Spence’s agility was so superior and he had such a speed advantage that he could avoid many hands with his step back and side movements, quickly coming back on the attack with his punching frequency to overcome his opponent’s successes.
With the passing of the minutes, and with clear tactical control, Spence decided to exchange at close range, but he generally did so quite intelligently, choosing the moment to launch his combinations of hooks and the instant in which he had to put up distance again. Ugas was becoming less and less active, so in the fifth round Spence landed many hooks up and down staying in close quarters, seeming that his rival was somewhat hurt by the punches.
However, in the sixth episode the American received a hard right uppercut that took off his mouth piece, turning around in confusion (and assuming that the referee was going to pause the actions) before receiving a right hand that threw him on the ropes. According to the rules, Spence should then have received a count, as the ropes prevented him from falling. In any case, with or without a knockdown, the result would not have changed, since in the rest of the round Spence fought very hard and in the seventh round he hurt Ugás with a left uppercut, then punishing the Cuban with strong uppercuts and hooks.
Ugás’ right eye was very swollen and he had to be examined by the doctor in the eighth round, in which again, despite his tenacious reply, he received very hard power shots from Spence. The punishment by «The Truth» continued in the following minutes, standing out his uppercuts, until in the tenth round the doctor indicated that Ugás’ eye was too bad to allow him to continue.
Right now Spence and Terence Crawford have two options, one being to find a way to reach a deal for an undisputed welterweight championship and the other to risk being dethroned by one of the division’s dangerous contenders (Jaron Ennis, Vergil Ortiz, Avanesyan, Stanionis, etc.). Both options are viable, but only one of them will give Spence and Crawford the biggest purse of their careers, a historic fight in this generation and the possibility of becoming a huge boxing figure who can aspire to have a place among the greats of all time in the division.
