Tim Tszyu was knocked down early but punished Gausha hard for a clear decision victory

The Armory, Minneapolis, USA. Super welterweight.

With a first-round knockdown, Australian Tim Tszyu’s 21(15KO)-0 American debut didn’t exactly start off well. Even so, he got up from the canvas and for the rest of the fight he overwhelmed with his pressure and strength the American Olympian Terrell Gausha 22(11KO)-3-1, who received many power shots and was heavily punished before losing by unanimous decision. Although Tszyu’s victory was crystal clear, the scores were ridiculous: 116-111, 115-112 and an absolutely repulsive 114-113.

Moving around and using his jab, Gausha had a good start in the fight, soon managing to score a knockdown with a counter straight right hand. As Gausha doesn’t have much punch, the knockdown didn’t do much damage to Tszyu, who by the second round had resumed his solid pressure throwing hard left hooks and right hands. With this alone, Tszyu put the American to his worst version, the one that has a very low punch rate and focuses on closing his guard under attack, avoiding Gausha critical damage only because of his chin and his defensive capacity.

Eventually the cunning hands of the Olympian Gausha kept coming , but Tszyu had shaken off his nerves and the initial scare and began to work with his power shots looking for the knockout, not letting his opponent grab him and punishing him with very dangerous hooks in the fourth round. Gausha appeared to be in trouble, but he withstood the shots, going into a fifth round in which he was definitely hurt by a right overhand, which appeared to make him put his knee on the canvas, though there was no count. In any case, then Tszyu began to attack more and more, exposing himself to clear blows in order to connect his powerful hands.

Sometimes, the local hit his rival with sharp punches, but in general he was suffering a worrying punishment by the hooks, uppercuts and straights of Tszyu, who was not fast but who was very regular and aggressive and knew how to keep Gausha neutralized on the ropes. The American risked exchanging at close range in the eighth round, but received powerful uppercuts that stopped this last attempt to react, so that, beyond some good hands, in the rest of the fight he continued to be dangerously punished despite his commendable efforts to resist.

The knockdown added to his constant neglect of defense will not exactly help Tszyu to avoid the criticism of his detractors and, on the other hand, it is reasonable to debate whether he could really achieve a victory against the undisputed super welterweight champion who will come out of the Charlo-Castaño II if he makes the same mistakes as against Gausha. However, Tszyu not only showed gaps in his game, but also displayed great endurance (he threw 749 punches according to Compubox), strength and power, as well as a tremendous offensive continuity. Thus, regardless of whether he will have gained more or less experience from the clash, Tszyu at least showed that he is a boxer who is not intimidated by difficulties, who is also dangerous at the high level and who is capable of generating very entertaining fights.
