El invicto peso superligero Mazlum Akdeniz conservó su récord invicto ante el mexicano Erick Encinia, si bien lo hizo con una controvertida decisión dividida, puesto que el visitante pareció hacer más que suficiente para haber salido con el brazo en alto.

El choque entre el estadounidense Quinton Randall e Iván Álvarez concluyó con un empate técnico en el segundo round a causa de un corte por choque de cabezas. Así que el duelo más relevante del cartel fue finalmente el que dejó el triunfo por KOT en el cuarto asalto del prospecto del peso ligero Luis “Koreano” Torres ante Rodolfo “Rudy” Flores.

También el jueves el imbatido peso pesado estadounidense Sonny “The Bronco” Conto 9(7KO)-0 sumó un nuevo triunfo, además uno con amplias puntuaciones (triple 60-54) ante Mike Marshall 6(4KO)-3(2)-1, si bien el ganador no se mostró satisfecho con su actuación. De todos modos, Conto está iniciando todavía su recorrido profesional, obtuvo una victoria incuestionable y no deja de ser positivo que sea autocrítico y que quiera mejorar, así que por el momento todo marcha bien para el púgil.
Viernes 25 de febrero
El exaspirante mundial superwélter Jimmy “Kilrain” Kelly se anotó contra pronóstico la mayor victoria de su carrera truncando el récord invicto del peso medio Kanat Islam en el choque estelar de una velada de ProBox Promotions. Vídeo y crónica del combate siguiendo el enlace:

En el respaldo hubo otra sorpresa, puesto que el fogueado Jonathan Eniz derribó y superó por decisión al prospecto Mark Reyes Jr. Por otro lado, el peso wélter Peter Dobson tuvo una sólida actuación en su victoria unánime ante José Miguel Borrego. Respecto al campeonato por el vacante cinturón de la Unión Europa del peso supergallo, el italiano Luca Rigoldi 26(9KO)-2-2 cumplió los pronósticos y se coronó derribando en una ocasión y batiendo por KOT en el noveno asalto al francés Hugo Legros 14(2KO)-2(1)-2. Así, Rigoldi sigue su remontada hacia la disputa de un combate por el máximo título EBU, cinturón que posiblemente intentará capturar de nuevo tras alguna defensa de su corona UE.
En cuanto al choque coestelar, Andrea Roncon 18(3KO)-7(2)-1 fue derrotado por Carlo De Novellis 9(0KO)-4-1 con una decisión dividida (97-94, 94-96, 94-96) que le valió para capturar la vacante corona italiana del peso medio, mayor éxito de su carrera que le llega ya no lejos del retiro.
Pasando a la velada japonesa, dos nuevas campeonas mundiales fueron coronadas. Por un lado, Mika Iwakawa 10(3KO)-6-1 perdió su título WBO del peso átomo en la revancha contra Nanae Suzuki 11(1KO)-4(1)-1, que se proclamó campeona con una muy ajustada decisión dividida (96-94, 94-96, 94-96). Por otro lado, Eri Matsuda 4(1KO)-1-1 tampoco logró el título mundial en su segundo campeonato, puesto que fue vencida de forma mayoritaria (doble 96-94 y un 95-95) por la experimentada Ayaka Miyao 25(6KO)-9(4)-2, ahora campeona IBF del peso átomo. Quizás exista la posibilidad de nuevos igualados duelos entre estas púgiles, si bien por una vez sería interesante que se buscase una unificación en la división que pudiese aumentar el prestigio de la ganadora.

El viernes también dejó estos otros resultados:
-El enfrentamiento del peso supermosca entre Cuahutli Guerrero 13(6KO)-2(1)-2 y Eric Gamboa 22(11KO)-1 terminó con una victoria unánime del segundo de ambos, que llevó a 15 su racha de triunfos y que quizás a lo largo de este año pueda alcanzar el mayor combate de su carrera.
-El peso ligero Agustín Quintana 16(11KO)-1-1 logró su quinto triunfo antes del límite en sus últimos seis enfrentamientos batiendo por KO en el quinto round a Reuquén Arce 14(7KO)-6(2)-2, éxito que le valió el vacante cinturón sudamericano. Quintana parece estar en muy buen estado y sería interesante verlo pronto en un significativo paso adelante en aumento de dificultad para comprobar si mantiene su eficacia y su capacidad de definición.
-El invicto superwélter Nabil Messaoudi 8(8KO)-0 se deshizo del asequible Ivan Matute 30(25KO)-5(3) en dos asaltos, los mismos que tardó en lograrlo Carlos “Chema” Ocampo, por lo que sigue avanzando firme a la espera de que le lleguen tests de calibre.
Sábado 26 de febrero
El campeón mundial WBA, WBC, WBO e IBF del peso superligero Josh Taylor logró retener su título indiscutido con una decisión dividida ante Jack Catterall en un combate igualado y embarrado en el que el campeón cayó pero el retador se agarró mucho y tuvo tramos de mucha inactividad. Así, la victoria de Taylor fue justificable pese a la controversia que provocaron deliberadamente los comentaristas del evento.

Quizás la mayor sorpresa de la semana llegó en la eliminatoria WBA superpluma entre Chris Colbert y Héctor Luis García, puesto que, aunque el primero es un púgil prometedor y su rival llegaba avisado con poca antelación y a una enorme distancia en las apuestas, García anuló completamente como visitante al invicto estadounidense, que tuvo una actuación muy mala.

En el semifondo de este evento de PBC, el peso superligero Gary Antuanne Russell tuvo un notable rendimiento y se convirtió en el primero en batir antes del límite a Viktor Postol, si bien la detención arbitral en el último round fue extraña y polémica.

La cartelera televisada se abrió con la coronación de un nuevo campeón mundial, puesto que el titular IBF del peso supermosca Jerwin Ancajas fue superado por la cadencia de golpeo y la determinación de Fernando Martínez, que logró una victoria unánime amplia y el cinturón mundial.

La restante gran sorpresa de esta semana cargada de resultados contra pronóstico fue la derrota del veterano excampeón mundial cubano Guillermo “El Chacal” Rigondeaux 20(13KO)-3(1) ante el filipino Vincent Astrolabio 17(12KO)-3(1), boxeador que es poco más que una piedra de toque pero que logró derribar a su oponente y vencerle por decisión unánime (triple 95-94). Por ello, muchos aficionados están pidiendo ya a Rigondeaux que ponga fin a su carrera, si bien es cuestionable que el púgil les vaya a hacer caso, especialmente si le llega pronto alguna buena oferta desde Estados Unidos.
Tras diversas cancelaciones, en el sábado sólo restan por destacar estos resultados:
-Con una ajustada decisión unánime (triple 96-94) Jesse Espinas 20(11KO)-4(1) fue derrotado a manos de Esneth Domingo 15(8KO)-1 en el duelo de pesos moscas filipinos. El triunfo debería servirle a Domingo tanto para situarse al borde del acceso al top 15 como para poder apuntar a una nueva crucial pelea en el futuro próximo.
-El campeón de Sudamérica del peso supermedio Abraham Buonarrigo 11(9KO)-2 resolvió su primera defensa con su segundo triunfo antes del límite consecutivo, siendo esta vez el púgil vencido un Juan Gabriel Rizo 10(9KO)-4(3) que sucumbió por KOT en el segundo round.
Domingo 27 de febrero
El monarca WBO del peso crucero Lawrence Okolie y su retador obligatorio Michal Cieslak ofrecieron el que será uno de los peores mundiales del año, ya que se hubo infinidad de clinches y de imprecisiones en una pelea embarrada y deslucidísima en la que se impuso no muy ampliamente Okolie. En cambio, en el semifondo el oro olímpico Galal Yafai brilló en su debut profesional ante Carlos Vado Bautista.

Por otro lado, en el evento se produjo el fin del reinado de Karim Guerfi como campeón de Europa pluma, dado que, aunque derribó en una ocasión a su rival y lo tuvo al borde de la derrota, Jordan Gill le noqueó brutalmente en el noveno asalto. Antes, el peso medio Anthony Fowler logró una victoria de recuperación contra Lukasz Maciec.

La cartelera principal de este evento de Matchroom se completó con victorias antes del límite para el peso pesado Fabio Wardley, que a penas se tuvo que esforzar para noquear a Daniel Martz, y el peso ligero Campbell Hatton, que batió por KOT en el último round a Joe Ducker.

Al margen de estos combates emitidos por DAZN, el peso pesado Demsey McKean venció a los puntos a Ariel Bracamonte, el peso semipesado John Hedges batió por KOT en el cuarto round a Aleksander Nagolski y el debutante peso crucero Cheavon Clarke superó en dos rounds a Tonić. Finalmente, la semana dejó estos otros resultados:
-El peso superpluma Moussa Gholam 19(12KO)-0 resolvió su prueba ante el muy experimentado Tomás “Gusano” Rojas 52(34KO)-20(5)-1 con un KOT en el quinto asalto, por lo que parece evidente que está listo para dejar de pelear contra veteranos y piedras de toque y comenzar a encarar combates ante boxeadores con aspiraciones.
-El campeón de Japón del peso mosca Seigo Yuri Akui 17(11KO)-2(2)-1 conservó su cinturón por tercera vez con una amplísima victoria unánime (triple 100-90) sobre Takuya Kogawa 32(14KO)-7(1)-1, de modo que quizás suba algún peldaño en su posicionamiento (5º WBO, 8º WBC, 14º IBF).
-Más cerca aún de un mundial o de una eliminatoria está el 3º WBC del peso minimosca Tibo Monabesa 22(8KO)-1(1)-2, púgil indonesio que venció por decisión al invicto Jayson Vayson 9(5KO)-1-1 y que a lo largo de este año podría disputar una antesala mundialista.

Thursday, February 24
Unbeaten welterweight Mazlum Akdeniz kept his undefeated record against Mexican Erick Encinia, although he did it with a controversial split decision, as the visitor seemed to do more than enough to deserve the victory. Read more following the link.
The clash between the American Quinton Randall and Iván Álvarez ended with a technical draw in the second round due to a cut caused by a clash of heads. So the most relevant duel of the card was finally the one that ended with the triumph by TKO in the fourth round of lightweight prospect Luis «Koreano» Torres against Rodolfo «Rudy» Flores. Also on Thursday, the unbeaten American heavyweight Sonny «The Bronco» Conto 9(7KO)-0 added a new victory to his record with wide scorecards (triple 60-54) against Mike Marshall 6(4KO)-3(2)-1. However, the winner was not satisfied with his performance. In any case, Conto is still at the beginning of his professional career, he obtained an unquestionable victory and it is positive that he is self-critical and wants to improve, so for the moment everything is going well for the boxer.
Friday February 25
Former super welterweight world challenger Jimmy “Kilrain” Kelly scored the biggest win of his career by upset breaking middleweight Kanat Islam’s undefeated record in the main event of a ProBox Promotions card. Video and article of the fight following the link.
In the backup there was another surprising result, as veteran Jonathan Eniz knocked down and outscored prospect Mark Reyes Jr. Also, welterweight Peter Dobson put in a solid performance in his unanimous win over Jose Miguel Borrego. Video and article of the fights following the link.
Regarding the championship for the vacant European Union super bantamweight belt, the Italian Luca Rigoldi 26(9KO)-2-2 was crowned champion knocking down on one occasion and beating Frenchman Hugo Legros 14(2KO)-2(1)-2 by TKO in the ninth round. Thus, Rigoldi continues his comeback towards the dispute of a fight for the maximum EBU title, a belt that he will possibly try to capture again after some defenses of his EU crown.
As for the co-main event, Andrea Roncon 18(3KO)-7(2)-1 was defeated by Carlo De Novellis 9(0KO)-4-1 with a split decision (97-94, 94-96, 94-96) which granted him the vacant Italian middleweight title, greatest success of his career that comes not far from retirement.
Moving on to the Japanese evening, two new world champions were crowned. On the one hand, Mika Iwakawa 10(3KO)-6-1 lost her WBO atomweight title in a rematch against Nanae Suzuki 11(1KO)-4(1)-1, who became champion with a very close split decision (96-94, 94-96, 94-96). On Friday there were these other results:
-The super flyweight matchup between Cuahutli Guerrero 13(6KO)-2(1)-2 and Eric Gamboa 22(11KO)-1 ended with a unanimous victory for the second of both, who extended his winning streak to 15 and perhaps can reach the biggest fight of his career throughout this year.
-Lightweight Agustín Quintana 16(11KO)-1-1 achieved his fifth win by stoppage in his last six matches beating Reuquén Arce 14(7KO)-6(2)-2 by KO in the fifth round, a success with which he captured the vacant South American belt. Quintana seems to be in pretty good shape and it would be interesting to see him soon in a significant step up in difficulty to find out if he maintains his effectiveness in a new level.
-The undefeated super welterweight Nabil Messaoudi 8(8KO)-0 defeated Ivan Matute 30(25KO)-5(3) in two rounds, the same number of rounds Carlos “Chema” Ocampo needed to defeat this opponent, so he continues to advance steadily waiting for harder tests.
Saturday February 26
WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF super Lightweight world champion Josh Taylor managed to retain his indisputed title with a split decision against Jack Catterall. It was a close and muddy fight in which the champion was dropped but the challenger clinched a lot and had periods of a lot of inactivity. Thus, Taylor’s victory was justifiable despite the controversy deliberately provoked by the event’s commentators. Read more following the link.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the week came in the WBA super featherweight eliminator between Chris Colbert and Héctor Luis García. Although Colbert is a promising fighter and his rival was a late substitute at a huge distance in the betting odds, García completely overwhelmed as a visitor the undefeated American, who had a very poor performance. In the co-feature of this PBC event, welterweight Gary Antuanne Russell put in a remarkable performance and became the first to beat Viktor Postol by stoppage, although the final round TKO was strange and controversial. Read more following the link.
The televised card opened with the crowning of a new world champion, as IBF super flyweight titleholder Jerwin Ancajas was outclassed by the rhytm and determination of Fernando Martinez, who obtained a lopsided unanimous decision victory and the world belt. Read more following the link.
The remaining big upset of this week full of surprises was the defeat of veteran former world champion Guillermo «El Chacal» Rigondeaux 20(13KO)-3(1) against Filipino Vincent Astrolabio 17(12KO)-3(1), boxer that is not even a gatekeeper but who managed to knock his opponent down and beat him by unanimous decision (triple 95-94). For this reason, many fans are asking Rigondeaux to put an end to his career, although it is questionable that the boxer will pay attention to them, especially if he receives a good offer from the United States.
After several cancellations, on Saturday only these other results standed out:
-With a very close unanimous decision (triple 96-94) Jesse Espinas 20(11KO)-4(1) was defeated at the hands of Esneth Domingo 15(8KO)-1 in a flyweight duel between Filipinos. The win should approach Domingo to the brink of breaking into the top 15 and very near to another crucial fight.
-The South American super middleweight champion Abraham Buonarrigo 11(9KO)-2 resolved his first defense with his second consecutive stoppage victory, this time against Juan Gabriel Rizo 10(9KO)-4(3), who succumbed by TKO in the second round.
Sunday February 27
The WBO cruiserweight champion Lawrence Okolie and his mandatory challenger Michal Cieslak offered what will be one of the worst world championship fights of the year, since there were countless clinches and inaccuracies in a muddy and lackluster fight. Okolie was the winner by a not very wide decision. On the co-feature, Olympic gold medalist Galal Yafai shone in his professional debut against Carlos Vado Bautista. Read more following the link.
This card marked the end of Karim Guerfi’s reign as European featherweight champion since, although he knocked down his rival once and had him on the verge of defeat, Jordan Gill brutally knocked him out in the ninth round. The main card of this Matchroom event was completed with stoppage victories for heavyweight Fabio Wardley, who barely had to put effort against Daniel Martz, and lightweight Campbell Hatton, who beat Joe Ducker by TKO in the last round. Read more following the link.

-Super featherweight Moussa Gholam 19(12KO)-0 passed his test against the very experienced Tomás “Gusano” Rojas 52(34KO)-20(5)-1 with a TKO in the fifth round, so it seems evident that he is ready to stop fighting veterans and start taking on fighters with aspirations.
-The Japanese flyweight champion Seigo Yuri Akui 17(11KO)-2(2)-1 retained his belt for the third time with a wide unanimous decision victory (triple 100-90) over Takuya Kogawa 32(14KO)-7(1 )-1, so maybe he’ll move up some positions in the rankings (5th WBO, 8th WBC, 14th IBF).
-Even closer to a world championship is the 3rd WBC light flyweight Tibo Monabesa 22(8KO)-1(1)-2, an Indonesian boxer who defeated the unbeaten Jayson Vayson 9(5KO)-1-1 by decision and that throughout this year could reach an eliminator.
