Ya se conocen y están confirmados los dos primeros combates que compondrán el respaldo principal del mundial del peso ligero Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano, evento que tendrá lugar el día 30 de abril en el Madison Square Garden de Nueva York, Estados Unidos, emitido por DAZN. Uno los choques será el interesante enfrentamiento del peso superwélter entre Jessie Vargas y Liam Smith, mientras que el otro será la pugna por la corona mundial indiscutida del peso supermedio femenino entre Franchon Crews-Dezurn y Elin Cederroos.
Habiendo un choque estelar de tanto calibre, no hubiese hecho falta un gran respaldo para que se le prestase atención al evento, pero ahora todavía habrá más motivos para ello al haberse incluido un combate que iba a ser cabeza de cartel de otra velada y una pugna en la que todos los cinturones de una división se aunarán y surgirá una nueva figura destacada en el boxeo femenino.
Vargas se mostró muy motivado por este combate:
“Afortunadamente he dejado atrás el COVID. Quiero mostrar a todo el mundo que soy mejor que antes. He estado trabajando en cosas en el gimnasio, así que no es como si hubiese tenido dos años de inactividad. Liam está hablando mucho, la llama arde dentro de mí. A mí no se me hace trash talk, voy al combate como una persona diferente. Esta será una pelea llena de acción. Voy a explotar todas sus debilidades y sacarlo de en medio. ¡Mi meta es noquearlo y enviarlo al retiro! Va a ser una noche increíble. Amanda y Katie son pioneras del deporte, y es un honor para mí ser parte de este histórico evento en Nueva York”.
Además de destacar la importancia de este combate, Smith también coincidió con Vargas en su deseo de enviar al retiro a su rival:
“Estoy motivado y orgulloso por pelear en el Madison Square Garden. Es un lugar que puedo tachar de mi lista de deseos ahora junto a Las Vegas; el MSG es la cumbre del boxeo y todo pasa por una razón, así que estoy feliz de dirigirme a Nueva York el 30 de abril. El combate principal es fantástico, Katie está siempre en peleas emocionantes, y estoy seguro de que habrá muchos fans británicos e irlandeses que estarán allí apoyándome a mí también. Este combate es una espina que tenía que sacarme desde hace tiempo y quiero derrotar a Jessie, derrotarle bien y seguir adelante. Espero que esté sano y en forma esta vez ya que apunto a retirarlo y enviarlo a la política. Él quiere ser político, y le daré una razón para concentrarse en ello al 100%. ¿Que Jessie me gane por detención? Lo encuentro muy improbable cuando sólo una persona lo ha logrado y Jessie no es Canelo Álvarez. Tengo toda la intención de vencerle por detención, ser el primer hombre que lo consigue y añadir mi nombre al de los nombres que le han derrotado.
Cambiando de pelea, Crews-Dezurn mostró su total confianza en lograr coronarse titular indiscutida en esta cita histórica:
“Muchos momentos icónicos han tenido lugar en el MSG, especialmente en boxeo. Así que estar junto a dos de las mejores boxeadoras libra por libra del deporte y hacer historia convirtiéndome en campeona indiscutida hace que todo lo que ha pasado en mi carrera haya valido la pena. Aposté por mí misma en mi icónico debut profesional y ahora es hora de llevarse a casa el bote. New York es donde los sueños se hacen y el mío se cumplirá el 30 de abril, voy a ganar todos los cinturones”.
Consciente de la mentalidad ganadora con la que encara el choque su oponente, Cederroos replicó que ella también está segura de volver a su país coronada:
“He estado esperando este combate por mucho tiempo, pero ha valido la pena la espera. Pelear en el Madison Square Garden es un sueño hecho realidad y hacerlo en una noche tan histórica para el boxeo femenino es un verdadero honor. Sé que Franchon confía en que va a ganar, pero nunca ha peleado contra alguien como yo. Voy a llevarme esos cinturones de vuelta a Suecia y convertir esa noche en una que nunca olvidaré”.

The first two fights that will compose the main support of the lightweight world championship Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano, event that will take place on April 30 at the Madison Square Garden in New York, United States, streamed by DAZN, are now confirmed. One of the matches will be the interesting super welterweight showdown between Jessie Vargas and Liam Smith, while the other will be the fight for the undisputed women’s super middleweight world crown between Franchon Crews-Dezurn and Elin Cederroos.
Having a main clash of such importance, it would not have been necessary a great support for the event, but now there will be even more reasons for paying attention to it, as has been included a fight that was going to be the headliner of another bill and a bout in which all the belts of a division will come together and a new outstanding figure in women’s boxing will emerge.
Vargas is very motivated by this fight:
“Thankfully I’m now through COVID. I want to show everyone I’m better than before, I’ve been working on things in the gym, so it’s not like I’ve had a two year lay-off. Liam is talking a lot, the fire is burning inside me. You don’t trash talk me, I’m coming in a different person. This will be an action-packed fight. I’ll exploit all of his weaknesses and take him out – My goal is to knock him out and retire him! It’s going to be an amazing night. Amanda and Katie are trailblazers for the sport, and I’m honored to be a part of an historic event in New York.”
In addition to highlighting the importance of this fight, Smith also agreed with Vargas on his desire to send his rival into retirement:
“I’m buzzing and proud to be fighting at Madison Square Garden. It’s one I can tick off my bucket list now along with Las Vegas; MSG is the pinnacle of boxing and everything happens for a reason so I am happy to be heading to New York on April 30. The main event is fantastic, Katie is always in exciting fights, and I am sure there will be lots of British and Irish fans there that will be backing me too. This fight is an itch that has needed scratching for a long time now and I want to beat Jessie and beat him well and move on. I hope that he turns up fit and healthy this time as I am aiming to retire him and send him into politics. He wants to move into politics, and I will give him a reason to concentrate on that 100 per cent. Jessie stopping me? I find that highly unlikely when only one person has done that and Jessie is no Canelo Alvarez. I fully intend on stopping him, being the first man to do it and adding my name to the names that have beaten him.”
Crews-Dezurn showed his total confidence in being crowned as undisputed champion in this historic event:
“Many iconic moments have happened at MSG, especially in boxing. So to be alongside to two of the best P4P boxers in the sport and make history becoming the undisputed champion makes everything in my career worth it thus far. I bet on myself in my iconic pro debut and now it’s time bring home the jackpot. New York is where dreams are made of and mine will come true April 30, I am winning all the belts.”
Aware of the winner mindset with which her opponent faces the fight, Cederroos replied that she is also sure of returning to her country with the belts:
“I have been waiting for this fight for so long now – but this has made it worth the wait. To be fighting at Madison Square Garden is a dream come true and to be doing so on such an historic night for women’s boxing is a real honor. I know that Franchon is confident that she will win, but she’s never fought anyone like me. I will be taking those belts back to Sweden and making it a night I will never forget.”
