In February 2020, the boxer nicknamed «El Orgullo de Maternillo», the Puerto Rican Subriel Matías 17(17KO)-1, faced a demanding development fight against the Russian-Armenian Petros Ananyan 16(7KO)-2-2, a competent, tough and capable boxer, who had some upset wins but who had also recent losses by decision against Steve Claggett and Kareem Martin. Therefore, the outstanding prospect Matías, with a 100% knockout ratio, was clear favorite to prevail, although he ended up suffering a knockdown and losing by a unanimous decision against Ananyan.

About two years later, Matías and Ananyan meet again in the co-feature of the Russell-Magsayo event, which will take place this Saturday at the Borgata Hotel in Atlantic City, United States. The interesting bout Matías-Ananyan II will also have at stake entering into direct contention for the world championship in the super lightweight division: Matías won a semi-final eliminator against Batyrzhan Jukembayev which was part of the IBF tournament (along with Jeremías Ponce vs. Lewis Ritson) to decide the mandatory challenger of this organization in the 140 pounds category.

In any case, beyond the fact that the winner will approach to a very important duel, for Matías this confrontation has an evident significance, as he wishes to get revenge for his only defeat. Full of motivation, with greater aspirations than his rival and having an advantage in power and reach (5” more), besides better recent results, it is inevitable that Matías enters to the rematch as a favorite despite the negative precedent.

In the first bout, which was very hard and full of exchanges, Matías paid the price for his defensive carelessness, his inadequate attention to fatigue and his wrong approach to a close range fight, all of this mixed perhaps with some overconfidence. Even so, and although he was put in serious trouble, for many he deserved that the judges had given him the favorable verdict due to his aggressive combinations, with which he also damaged Ananyan. In addition, now Matías enters the fight after having been overwhelming against two undefeated, the last of them the Kazakh Jukembayev, with better power-skills balance than Ananyan and who also was in a better moment in his career.

For his part, the Russian-Armenian, although he is a cunning and dangerous boxer, has only fought once since his bout against Matías, defeating last October by a hard-earned majority decision Daniel González, a boxer very far from the level of the top 15. Thus, adding together the best recent precedents of Matías, the feeling that perhaps Ananyan has less room for improvement in the rematch and that it is possible that we will see again a very intense fight, the Puerto Rican seems in position to achieve victory.

In order to try to avoid it Ananyan, even though is strong and precise, should try to reduce the exchanges without initiative, rely more on his counterattacks in middle-long and try to exploit the important flaws in the defense of his rival with his cunning, especially trying to anticipate with punch rate and angles if he is forced to battle at close range. On the other hand, Matías should try not to expend his energies too soon and try to deploy his devastating pressure with firmness, order and without neglecting his defense so much, scenario in which this time he could obtain the victory, especially if he selects better the distance in the exchanges. Anyway, whoever wins, this bout has all the potential to be very entertaining to watch and seems an excellent co-feature for a very good world championship main event.

Nyambayar fights replacement Lukas
Opening Showtime’s broadcast of the Russell-Magsayo event was initially going to be a featherweight matchup between Mongolian Olympic silver medalist Tugstsogt «King Tug» Nyambayar 12(9KO)-2 and skilled American Vic Pasillas, but the second of both tested positive in a PCR less than a week before the bout. In this way, a replacement was sought, the Namibian Sakaria «Desert Storm» Lukas 25(17KO)-1, who in his only important fight was defeated by Isaac Avelar, that later was knocked out in three rounds by Eduardo Ramírez.

It is true that Nyambayar comes from a defeat, but this was more a merit of his opponent than a demerit of him, since he suffered it against the very skilled Chris Colbert, who in a month could become super featherweight world champion. Thus, as the former world challenger is a methodical, powerful and effective pressure-technician and his opponent Lukas did not rise to the occasion against an Avelar far from the level of the top, everything seems to indicate that Nyambayar will manage to return to the path of victory.

The card of the Russell-Magsayo, Matías-Ananyan II and Nyambayar-Lukas fights will be broadcasted on Saturday by Showtime from 21:00 ET / 18:00 PT.
